The Battle of Cuito Cuanavale was a major late–Cold War confrontation in southern Angola between Cuban, Angolan, and Namibian forces on one side and South African and UNITA forces on the other, widely seen as a turning point in the conflicts that led to Namibian independence and the weakening of apartheid South Africa.
